Default The Official Groovey Records Build Thread

Alright folks, I've finally got the parts I need to start Groovey Records build. This is the one that Groovey started talking about in the original Strange Brew group. It has been in the planning stages for a little while now but we've got most of the detail worked out now and yesterday I started making some sawdust.

Before I start with the pics I'll give a quick a rundown of what Groovey and I are building. The body is a one piece chunk of Eastern White Pine that came from Vince at Taipan Tone. When I got the body from Vince the outside shape was roughed in. The neck pocket and control cavity had been done and the string holes had been drilled. Taipan Tone is also providing the bridge, control plate, neck plate and string block. The neck will be a two piece all rosewood neck with gold frets build by myself. The bridge pup will be a Don Mare StingRay and the neck a Lollar Charlie Christain.

So that's the general idea. Groovey can fill in any detail I've forgotten. Now, on with the pics. The first thing I did was take the body as it came to me and did some sanding to get it all cleaned up and lookin' purty.

Then I laid out the bridge pup, roughed the cavity out on the drill press and routed the final shape with the router.

Here is the bridge pup all routed.

Next I drilled the two outside string holes through to the back side of the body. After the body is finished I'll use those holes to index the jig I'll use to route for the string block. I'm doing it after finishing so that we have an nice clean cavity that will give a tight fit with the string block and get the best transfer of energy from the string to the body.

The 7/8" hole for the output jack was drilled next.

The last thing I did on the body was drill the wire hole from the bridge to the control cavity. For this I use a VERY long 1/4" drill bit.

And now on to the neck. Here is the blank. A GREAT lookin' chunk of wood! Its been sitting in my shop for a while now and should be acclimated by now.

First thing I did was figure out my cuts and how best to use the wood.

Now it was time to make some sawdust. I sliced it into three pieces and labeled the faces so that when I glue the fretboard back on I can grain going the same way.

The last thing I did was sticker the rosewood. I'll let it sit some more before I start milling.

Great chronicle of events! Looks like it will be an interesting instrument. Though I noticed one caption said neck pup cavity routed, but maybe I missed that.
Very interested to see the neck come together. I only made one neck and it was a disaster.
Thanks for the pics, can't wait for more.
Allan.

Thanks for pointing out the neck pup thing, I meant to say bridge pup. There is a Lollar CC going in the neck. I'm just waiting for it to show up before I do the route.

I just strung up the Gretschquire and fired it up for a listen to the Don Mare Three Speed Stingray pickup I put in yesterday and man are you gonna love it!!

Super sweet cleans on position 3 and progressively nastier grit as you go from position 2 to 1. This is one awesome pickup!!

Hoping to get a clip up shortly so you can get a listen.

A few years ago the Birds and Moons guys had some matching group truss rod covers made fer their guitars.

You should try to find something similar we could all put on our Strange Brew Builds. Neck Plates or something.
